Barbara Zaveruha

My aim is to make useful pots, in lovely colors, referencing that prairie landscape. I take materials that come from the earth – clay and ground-up rocks, and create the conditions in which they can express their potential for beauty. I make high-fired stoneware for its strength and durability, and glaze with a palette of colors that do not depend on toxic compounds.

I love creating ceramic artwork that can be cherished for lifetimes. Creating pieces of beauty in both form and function represents the true aim of my work. I take clay and through water and flame change it into something that will exist far beyond myself.

I have come back to Northfield to study more in depth pottery techniques in the studio of Barbara Zaveruha. One of my interests is in exploring face vessels and emotion, or as I’ve explained, “how I really feel.” I am wishing to explore this form with simple glaze techniques, as well as incorporating found teeth in the finished product. My work is balanced between purpose and expression. I seek to make pieces that bring joy and usefulness. My face vases are born of a desire to create grotesque yet beloved vessels.

I enjoy making functional art because it offers unique beauty in everyday use. Currently I do a Talavera style and other glazes in a high-fire stoneware, and chattering effects with glazes from scratch. My goal is to create beautiful unique pieces that capture timeless beauty in the infinite possibilities of clay.
