Chris and Sue Holmquist are a husband/wife pottery team who have their home and studio in the beautiful countryside east of Northfield, Minnesota where they create colorful pottery with their original hand painted whimsical pictures on each pot. Their love of making this unique work is evident in their final product. The most common comment heard from those viewing the work is, “This pottery makes me smile!”

My hand-built clay work is part of an on going experiment in creating objects that have a timeless look; ancient, yet with a modern sensibility. I am interested in creating pieces that reveal unexpected contrasts in color, shape texture and surface.

Working with clay for the past 40 years has been a gradual addiction for me, but certain considerations have always been constants in my work. I want the forms I create to be accessible, generous, and inviting for people visually, as well as inviting for use. Through the years I have consistently incorporated my sense of humor into the pieces that I make — primarily drawing the animals that I enjoy, and stretching the limits of the clay medium.
